I loathe your exhaust manifolds with every fiber of my being. WHAT VINDICTIVE MORON DESIGNED THESE STUPID HUNKS OF GARBAGE!!!?? There’s a bolt in the back that’s literally impossible to access... No tool or combination of tools can get to it. And yet it seems like it ought to be possible. So what it becomes is a brilliantly evil little impossible puzzle that tricks you into wasting at least half an hour contorting yourself every which way while being jabbed by a million pointy things only to realize you’re not gonna be able to tighten that thing without removing at least the starter. It’s moments like this when I get the feeling that Phoebe doesn’t want to be a car anymore. She seems to be saying “I’m done, let it end.” But screw her wishes. She WILL be a car again and I WILL hear this engine roar to life once more, whether she likes it or not! But seriously though, those exhaust manifolds can go suck eggs.

When I did headers on my ‘10 Mustang GT, I learned you
have to take off both engine mounts
just to get to the headers.
I also learned
after
I finished the install that you’re supposed to rock the engine a degree or two deeper into the passenger side engine mount so the driver’s side header doesn’t vibrate against the steering column.

I’ve never sucked an egg but I imagine it would be fairly unpleasant. Almost as unpl easant as accessing an impossible screw. Speaking of screws, that describes the designer pretty well.

Ugh I’ve heard so many horror s197 header stories.
My local shop wants 1 1/2 days labor.

Yeah discs behind the wheel bearings used to be popular and a giant expensive pain in the ass to replace... I have them on my Mazda pickup and decided to just roll with a pad replacement since they were still OKish

The only logical explanation is that the designer had an irrational hatred of mechanics... I mean seriously, they couldn’t move that hole over an inch or two?

I wondered if headers would be easier to install, but there’s only about an inch of clearance between the manifolds and the unibody structure (you have to use an engine lift to access the manifold bolts, with the exception of that one bolt...), so headers wouldn’t fit without some major modifications to the structure of the vehicle...

What I’m mostly learning here is that while you can rebuild a Ford 390 V8 without removing it from the car, doing so is a huge pain and it would’ve been easier if I had just removed the engine first. But what’s done is done... Ti me to remove the starter so I can access a bolt.

Reminds me of the joke about the gynecologist turned mechanic that rebuilt an engine through the exhaust pipe...
